Description:

Pop singers play with different registers of the voice, including vocal fry or pulse register, and abruptly “flipping” from chest voice into falsetto (or a light head voice sound).

Find your vocal fry by pretending you’re a door creaking open. Then transition from fry into singing with this exercise. If you need to practice slowly a few times, do so! It’s okay if that fry doesn’t happen every time; it’s difficult at first to go from fry to tone.

Exercise: Vocal fry to whee 12, 34, 32, 1

Let’s practice some distinct registration, going from a strong chest voice sound to a light falsetto or breathy head voice.

Exercise: Distinct registration (chest to falsetto) - HEY 12345 Hoo 8—- HEY 54321

Now, we flip: meaning, we let our voice abruptly “switch” from chest or speaking voice to a light head voice sound. Your other syllable option is NO to oo. If you need to say HEY-ee or NO-oo both times, you can!

Exercise: Pop flip - HEY-ee/NO-oo 1-8, 18
