Hello everyone. I've been singing for about a year so I'm basicly a begginer, however my singing has gotten pretty good except for one thing. When I sing high (above and E4 probably) although I can hit the notes without straining, my tone gets kind of different, edgier and less pleasent and smooth. Any tips on fixing this? Plus I really like Shawn Mendes and would like your opinion on how to sing in his style (not imitate him but achieve stylistic elements like his tone and rasp). My range and vocal weight is pretty similiar to his, but I mainly struggle maintaining that Mendes style on high parts because my tone pretty much changes a whole lot and not for the better. Thanks in advance for any replies

Hi! If you're getting an overly edgy sound, it could be that (1) your larynx is rising too much or (2) the back of your tongue is "stuck" in a high position. Try singing on an UH vowel (as in bug) or OU (as in book), with awareness of your larynx and tongue both staying a bit lower (which those vowels help enable). You may even use an "unfinished" dark/dopey/yawny UH for the moment.
For pop stylization, here's a live lesson and tutorial for you!
