Hi
I'd like to practice head voice and try soprano rather than falsetto. Is it necessary to do the 'flip' or break when going from chest voice to head voice? Is it safe/healthy to make it smooth without the flip? Thanks

Hello!
It's actually ideal to have a smooth transition from chest to head voice (but most beginners have a "flip" or "break" as they switch abruptly). Most singers start with a noticeable break, and then use exercises with slides to help build a smooth, gradual transition over time!
The instance in which you would want that abrupt flip is in songs that utilize a "pop flip": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhW1K-U6ETY
