Standing or sitting down when you have an instrument?

    Hi,

I have seen in a lot of the blog articles here and also in some of the basic course videos the reccomendation to be standing up.

I completely understand the reason and the goal. My question is, since I am also using a guitar (and hopefully later on will be able to use the piano) should I also try to always do the warmups and exercises standing up? Would that then create a complete different posture for when I'm sitting down and playing guitar?

    Thank you

Standing is preferred for your best posture and support in general; but if you're seated, sit on the edge of your chair so your feet are on the ground. Keep your spine long and be careful of the tendency to reach your chin forward or roll your shoulders forward. We want to be just as energized and tall in our seated posture as in our standing!

    Hi Camille,

thank you for your prompt reply :). It makes total sense. In fact I think I'm going to try both approaches and learn the difference :)

Sounds great, Hugo! Certainly there are plenty of incredible singers who play an instrument and sing while seated (Elton John, Sara Bareilles, etc). The most important thing is that you don't "relax" into a slouched or disengaged position when seated, and that you're extra aware of your jaw/chin reaching.
