I always hear people talk about singing on key and it being easier to sing on key when you have an instrument as it is a reference to guide you but i find that even when Im singing along to an instrument I can't really find the key or know which note to start on which is strange cus when Im doing the intonation exercises in this course Im able to follow along with the key changes but singing along to an instrument makes me so lost, is this normal? is there something Im missing?

Hi, Kim! It's certainly a skill that takes time to develop. A few things could be happening:

    1. The instrument is playing in a different octave than the one you're comfortable singing in (for example, playing C3 and you're comfortable on C4 - see a virtual piano keyboard like Musicca's to hear the difference, and use a chromatic tuner like tuner.ninja to analyze your pitch)

    2. The instrument is playing chords, not the melody (and when you follow along with a lesson video, the piano is often playing the melody for you to match)

I recommend our "how to sing in tune for beginners" series (parts 1 & 2) for step by step practice learning how to sing in tune!
