Hi,
I am getting better at breathing deep into my lungs, which I confirm by placing a hand on my stomach/sides and making sure my shoulders don't rise when I inhale.
I wonder if i am breathing out correctly though. I notice after singing a phrase I often have to exhale before taking my next inhale. Should I be exhaling more of the air while I'm singing the phrase? Or is that purely a stylistic choice (for a more breathy tone). I do occassionally experience throat pain after singing so I wonder if I'm not doing breath support correctly.
Thanks!

Hi, Kristen! Sounds to me like you might be taking in too much air. Try taking shorter breaths - still low and relaxed, but perhaps less volume/length of time, and see if that helps. It's also possible that you could benefit from "moving" more air - try singing on something like ZAH, SHAH, THAH (with initial consonants that encourage more breath flow) and see if you feel more relaxed that way.
