tongue placement

Hello. I had my first lesson with Abram and we talked about tongue placement being key to vowel modification. For instance, eee and ooo tongue placement high, ahh low. But I'm a right in believing that the you use the jaw to achieve tongue placement. Doesn't seem possible to manipulate the base of the tongue independently. Hope that makes sense.
