How would I know that I'm not singing from my throat?? -

Hi, Demi!
All singing technically comes from your throat, since your larynx (and vocal folds) are in your throat. I think what people mean by "singing from the throat" is using extra muscles around your throat and neck to "force" the sound. If you're singing in this way, you'll feel some strain/pain when you sing, and you may see muscles on your throat "popping out".
