how to read music if two notes are given

    Hi,

I was in a website "song select" that many churches use for their worship music. In it, there is a section for vocals.  However, in it most times there are two notes given per lyric.  How do I know what note is meant to be sung? the top line or the bottom line? are these harmonics?

    Thanks

    Kevin

Hi, Kevin! Is one set of noteheads smaller than the other? Often times, the harmony part will be slightly smaller! Please feel free to upload a screenshot so I can see an example.

I see an option to insert an image, but the link you shared works too!

Since I'm familiar with the song, I know the melody is the top line (except for the second system, last line - I believe the melody ends on the E instead of the G for the word "soul").

It's a bummer the harmony isn't differentiated at all! But I'm going to guess that for most pieces of music like this, the melody will be the top line

Sure thing! I know it's an extra step, but you can always listen to the original and play one of the vocal lines to see if they match up. Happy to help in the future if there are any other songs you can't figure out!
