Hi Camille,
I wasint able to catch all of your response on a question I asked about combined breathing using the tummy, rib & back in last Saturday's lesson on pop singers so I just wanted to ask.
When I take in breath, I try to breath into the ribs so it expands horizontally to the sides but that also simultaneously expands the tummy slightly aswell (so it kinda feels like solving two problems at once). Here, I think you mentioned that we dont actually have to do this but we can do it in a more relaxed way?
if we take a relaxed breath that should expand all of those parts more equally?
Also this was what I asked in the previous session:
I was wondering with combined breathing that was mentioned in the module. I have noticed that when inhaling into the ribs/sides the belly also expands slightly but at a less extent as when we are only doing the tummy/diaphragm breathing. I tried to test both breathing styles with singing a phrase but I am still a beginner at this so im not able to hear if there are any differences in them. Which one is more preferred? Or how should we inhale to do a combined breath, should certain part of the body expand first?
Thank you
From

Hi, Kerrie!
The short answer is: we want a breath with 360 degrees of expansion - belly, ribs, and back. Your back will be more subtle, but you should still feel those back ribs expanding. If your belly muscles are relaxed when you inhale and your chest is not rising & falling with the breath, you're on the right track. It doesn't need to be a huge breath; but it should be a low, relaxed one.
