I know nothing of singing

I signed up a week ago having no clue on anything singing, I play guitar and its not much fun to play if I can't atleast sing a little bit.  My question is that the beginner courses pretty much start with doing scales and other things but how do I know if I am doing it right? Wlill the course eventually get there?  I have enjoyed the lessons so far but is there somewhere I should go other than the beginner courses to ensure I am doing stuff the right way?  Thank you for your help
